Pier 6 for playground time
Choose Pier 6 when the playground is the main event. The play areas are close enough that kids can move between different kinds of play without forcing a long waterfront march.
A practical way to choose between Pier 6, the waterfront, DUMBO, ferry rides, bathrooms, food, and views without turning the day into too much walking.
Brooklyn Bridge Park can be an excellent kid day because it has playgrounds, waterfront paths, food nearby, ferry access, and skyline views. The catch is distance. The park stretches along the waterfront, and a family day feels very different depending on whether you choose Pier 6, the DUMBO end, or a walk between them.
For younger kids, Pier 6 is usually the safer playground-first plan. It has multiple play areas close together, including Water Lab, Sandbox Village, Slide Mountain, and Swing Valley. For visitors who care more about the bridge views, carousel area, photos, and DUMBO streets, the northern end may make more sense.

Choose the DUMBO end when you want bridge views, waterfront photos, snacks, and a shorter loop. It can be easier for visitors who want the place to feel like Brooklyn, not just a playground trip.
A ferry ride can make the outing feel special, but it also adds timing and stroller logistics. If the ferry is not the point of the day, choose the entrance that keeps the walk shortest.
Pier 6 is the clear warm-weather playground choice because Water Lab gives kids a place to cool off. Bring a change of clothes and assume the stop may take longer than planned once water play starts.
If the playground is crowded, the waterfront still gives you space to reset. A bench, a snack, or a slow walk toward the next pier can save the outing without needing to force more playground time.
This is one of the easier NYC playground areas to stretch into a fuller outing. Families can keep it simple with playground and snacks, add a waterfront walk, take in the bridge views, or use DUMBO as the food-and-photo part of the day. A good day here does not have to cover the whole waterfront. Pick the section that matches your kids’ energy, then stop before the walk back becomes the hardest part.
Brooklyn Bridge Park has restroom locations, but the right one depends on which pier or entrance you choose. Check the park map before leaving, especially if you are planning water play at Pier 6 or a longer walk through DUMBO.
